Born in Essex, UK, into a business family, Anya Hindmarchwas educated at New Hall School. Following this, he went to Florence to learn Italian as part of his sabbatical before starting his formal education. Realizing that a leather bag with canvas cord was popular with Florentine fashionable women, Hindmarch borrowed $1,000 to import some of these bags into England. She sent the bag to the fashion magazine Harpers and Queen, as a result she sold him 500 pieces and started her business and therefore never got to go to university.
At age 18, Hindmarch went on to design his own bags, which were produced in Hackney. Inspired by Margaret Thatcher and the entrepreneurial spirit of the time, she opened a small shop on the first floor in Walton Street, London.
His early products were greatly influenced by Italian design principles. All of his pieces are based on quality of workmanship, with an emphasis on British humour and tailor-made adaptation. They are also influenced by a continued interest in architecture.
The company is now based in a former brewery in Battersea, from where 54 of the brand's stores in 17 countries are run. Its products are also sold at major retail chains including: Corso Como in Milan, Colette in Paris, Isetan in Tokyo, Japan; Saks in the United States, and Adora in the Philippines. Her designs are very popular with movie stars and celebrities, including: Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Madonna, Claudia Schiffer and Reese Witherspoon.
As is well known in the environmental environment, Anya Hindmarch gained fame thanks to her reusable cloth bag called "I'm not a plastic bag", which encourages women around the world to use this bag to do their shopping instead of wasting thousands of plastic bags.
