Chile. The Danish company Maersk Container Industry (MCI) will build a refrigerated container factory, making the southern country the first manufacturer and supplier of this industry in Latin America. The production plant will be built in the san antonio industrial district of the Valparaiso region.
The factory, which will involve an investment of close to US$170 million, will meet the industry's growing demand for exports of fresh products such as meat, fish and fruits from various producers in the Southern Cone.
The Chilean branch of Marsk will begin its work in 2013 and aims to reach a production of 40,000 refrigerated containers and about 30,000 refrigeration equipment for containers per year. This project contemplates offering employment to about 1,800 Chileans, mainly the inhabitants of San Antonio.
The multinational assures that this decision was made due to the growing demands that world trade will experience in the coming years, especially from producers in the region, to whom the Pacific west coast is key. "We have carried out this project with the solid support and cooperation of clients and local, regional and national authorities in Chile, with whom we have been working for a few years," said Peter Nymand, executive director of MCI.
