The Mexican ambassador to the EU, Sandra Fuentes-Berain, said today that Mexico has done "everything possible" to recover the "lost confidence" after the Copenhagen summit on climate change.
Fuentes-Berain, who spoke today before the Environment Committee of the European Parliament, stressed that "we must not fall into disappointment" before the climate meeting to be held in Cancun between November 29 and December 10.
The Mexican ambassador stressed that the sense of urgency to achieve an agreement in Cancun is "evident", and proof of this are the studies and the widespread concern, as well as the strong social demand for solutions to be decided.
In relation to the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16), Fuentes-Berain stated that "we must understand the difficulty of the challenge and not give up", especially taking into account the adverse economic and political context.
The Mexican ambassador explained that the primary objectives in Cancun are to maintain a binding legal agreement, support the second Kyoto commitment and adopt a "solid financial architecture" for the agreement.
"Climate change is a reality that we must learn to live with, so we cannot afford to waste time," he insisted.
The Mexican ambassador reiterated that they have promoted public and private dialogue and proof of this was the meeting that eu climate change officials held in Bonn (Germany) in June, in which they discussed carbon markets, as well as the next meeting that will take place in New Delhi on technological advances.
"Mexico and the EU work together after ten years of fruitful relations," said the Mexican representative in Brussels, who added that "if the European Union speaks with one voice it will have more weight."
Finally, the Mexican insisted that the Cancun Summit will mark the beginning of a new era of global actions against climate change "for the good of the European Union, Mexico and the whole world."
The European Union is the only bloc that has designed a plan for emissions reductions after 2012, when the Kyoto Protocol expires.
