Porsche plans to introduce a hybrid version of each model in its lineup – including, apparently, the venerable 911.
The sea change comes as the European Union tightens emissions regulations, Porsche has required to reduce its average CO2 emissions from 255 grams per kilometer to 216 in five years. The automaker believes hybrid transmissions will help it achieve this goal, according to Automotive News Europe.
Porsche has already released a cayenne hybrid and will use basically the same hardware in a panamera hybrid next year. Then comes the amazing 918 plug-in hybrid supercar. With the price approaching seven figures, the 918 will be little more than a showcase of technology incorporated in a very limited number.
"We want to know how we can electrify all our sports cars in the future with the help of this short production cycle." As for the gasoline and electric versions of the Boxer, Cayman and 911, a date is not yet available. But the R 911 GT3 hybrid is already racing. It can't be that big a jump from the track to the street.
Porsche will also explore the use of turbocharged four-cylinder engines and vehicle weight and air cut-off to further improve efficiency.
