'ASHRAE Handbook 2023 - HVAC Applications' Now Available

International. This year the edition consists of 67 chapters on various topics and installations, making it the largest volume published so far.

The purpose of the 'ASHRAE 2023 Handbook - HVAC Applications' is to provide industry professionals with reference material on the design and use of equipment and systems, some of which have been described in previous volumes of the book.

The main sections cover general, comfort, industrial, energy, operational and building management applications. ASHRAE technical committees reviewed each chapter, based on technological relevance and current design practices.

New chapters

  • Chapter 23: Fire and EMT Stations and Training Academies. It outlines best practices for conditioning and ventilating these vital facilities.
  • Chapter 66: Air Purifiers in Rooms It covers the use of room filtration to address air pollutants, with special emphasis on pathogen removal.

Updated and expanded chapters

  • Chapter 4: Tall Buildings. The discussion on the neutral pressure level (NPL) was expanded and a new elaborate example was added.
  • Chapter 8: Educational Facilities. Updated design criteria and included new content on air distribution, DOAS system controls, UVGI, indoor air purifiers, air quality monitoring, medical room design, and control panels and energy management systems.
  • Chapter 20: Data Centers and Telecommunications Facilities. Updated thermal envelope coverage and added discussions on cooling types, commissioning, fire protection, water issues, chillers and economizers.
  • Chapter 36: Use of Solar Energy The discussion on photovoltaics was broadened and information on green hydrogen as an energy source was added.
  • Chapter 38: Costs of Ownership and Operation. Information on building information modelling (BIM), computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS), building automation systems (BAS) and automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) was included.
  • Chapter 51: Heating Service Water The discussion on hot water load and equipment size was enriched, while detailed information on the size of the hotel hot water heating system was incorporated from ASHRAE's RP-1544 research project.
  • Chapter 56: Earthquake, Wind, and Flood Resistant Design A new section on flood resilience was created, in addition to expanding analyses on earthquake and wind resistance.
  • Chapter 65: Occupant-Centered Sensors and Controls Added information in categories on occupant comfort, recent studies in the field, greater details on modeling tools, and best practices.

Available presentations
The 'ASHRAE Handbook 2023 - HVAC Applications' is published as a bound printed volume and in PDF format. It is also available online, in two different editions: one that uses inch-pound (IP) units of measurement and a second that uses the International System of Units (SI).

Corrections to the 2019, 2020, and 2021 Manual volumes can be found on the ASHRAE website and in the 2022 Volume Additions and Corrections section. Fixes for the 2018 volume will be listed in subsequent volumes and on the ASHRAE website.
