The rehabilitation of the 700-megawatt Longview Power power plant in Maidsville, West Virginia, has transformed an operation previously beset by frequent outages and poor performance at one of the most efficient and clean coal plants in the United States.
Emerson contributed to the sea change by providing automation technologies and services that help Longview provide enough reliable and affordable electricity to power more than 500,000 homes.
A global team of Emerson automation experts worked to replace Longview's existing control system with new Ovation technology, which runs operations throughout the plant. The automation work was completed in just 13 months, nearly twice as fast as a typical project of this scope – a fact Emerson and Longview believe has never been done before.
Availability has increased to more than 98% and net generation has increased by more than a third – while using less fuel than before and producing carbon dioxide emissions 15% lower than the average from the U.S. coal-fired power plant. avoiding unplanned interruptions.
