United States. AHRI has created a subcommittee to conduct a review of the safety issues around lightly flammable refrigerants, to complete the necessary research, and share the results with regulators and standards developers.
With the increasing use of "slightly flammable" A2L refrigerants (especially HFC-32, HFO-1234yf, and HFO-1234zeE), more research is needed to provide scientific results needed to support the safe use of these refrigerants.
The Subcommittee on Flammable Refrigerants will identify gaps in the research of existing flammable refrigerants. It aims to help the industry understand the comparative risk of using A2L refrigerants with those used today. goo.gl/pHBLZy
ASHRAE has awarded the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland a $195,000 grant to support research into the accuracy and reproducibility of ASTM E681.
ASTM E681 is the fundamental test to determine whether a refrigerant is slightly flammable (A2L) or non-flammable (A1).
