United States. American Airlines recently installed a new refrigerated storage center at Philadelphia International Airport that had an investment of US$5 million.
The refurbished 2,300-square-meter refrigerated warehouse opened in late July, and can handle nearly four times the amount of perishable, time-sensitive, and valuable air cargo that travels in the belly of planes on passenger flights from American and its fusion partner US Airways. American operates an international hub with 460 daily flights in Philadelphia.
Products can be kept at three temperature ranges (15 to 25 °C, 2 to 8 °C and "frozen" from zero to -20 °C).
American has an additional 3,600-square-foot cold storage in a building that will continue to handle perishable cargo, such as fish, fresh flowers and vegetables, and fruits.
