The European Commission has highlighted as an example to be followed in the rest of Europe the strategy launched by Cantabria of "smart specialisation" in the field of renewable energies. This recognition has materialized within the framework of the European Sustainable Energy Week organized annually by the European network ERRIN in Brussels.
The event 'Smart regional specialisation strategies in the field of sustainable energy' aimed to recognise the fundamental role of innovation and smart specialisation in renewable energy as a key driver of economic growth in European regions.
Cantabria was represented by the General Director of Innovation and Corporate Strategy of Grupo Sodercan, Francisco Royano, in an event that was attended by representatives of the European Commission, such as Matthieu Fichter, (Regional General Directorate) who defined the concept of "Smart Specialization" or Kristine Kozlova (Directorate General of Energy), who presented the status of the National Action Plans on renewable energies that the states members have submitted to the European Commission.
According to the Cantabrian Government in a press release, during the meeting four examples of "good practices" of regions that have adopted smart specialization strategies were presented, such as the city of Nijmegen in Arnhem (Netherlands), the Oslo region (Norway) or the regions of Navarra and Cantabria in Spain.
Francisco Royano presented the commitment that is being developed in Cantabria for an intelligent specialization in offshore wind energy.
The European Commission applauded the strategies developed by these regions as an example to be followed by the other European regions and encouraged them to participate in the RegioStars 2011 conference, which will be held in Brussels on 23 June.
The case of Cantabria was especially valued by the European Commission since it presented the philosophy of collaboration and knowledge transfer between the university and business fields, under the impulse of the Government, which inspires Cantabrian specialization.
In addition, the Cantabrian case will occupy a prominent place in the web platform prepared by the European Commission on the 'Smart Specialization Strategy'. It is intended that this web portal will be a tool for the exchange of information between the regions and that it will serve to train in the skills necessary to implement these regional strategies.
ERRIN NETWORK
The ERRIN network was established in 2001 as a platform, based in Brussels, which offers a unique opportunity for regions involved in research and innovation issues to participate in the development of the European research area.
This platform also provides support to these regions with the aim of participating fully and effectively in the European research area.
Between April 2004 and March 2006, ERRIN received support from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research, through the pilot action 'Regions of Knowledge'. Since 2007 ERRIN is a non-profit association, thus becoming a stable and sustainable network by itself. The network currently has 90 members representing as many European regions. (EUROPA PRESS)
