Thermal insulation: reflective materials

Most of the energy demand of buildings comes from the heating and cooling of buildings. This demand is conditioned by the thermal insulation of the enclosures that constitute its thermal envelope.

Among the multiple technologies available on the market to reduce energy demand in buildings, the use of reflective thermal insulators stands out.

The flow of heat through the enclosures of the thermal envelope of buildings is produced by heat transfer methods:

Transmission by conduction. Convection transmission. Transmission by radiation. Traditional materials (rock wool, projected polyurethane...) are ineffective in reducing heat loss/gain from radiation.

During the winter between 50-75% of the heat losses through the roofs and between 65-80% of the losses due to walls are due to thermal radiation. While in summer up to 93% of heat gains are due to thermal radiation.

The use of reflective insulating materials in the construction of buildings comes from the experience accumulated in the aerospace industry.

The structure of these materials combines the use of thin sheets of aluminum, with high capacity for reflection of thermal radiation, with a matrix of polyethylene bubbles. Aislamiento térmico: materiales reflectivos
By using this type of material, the energy demand for air conditioning can be reduced by up to 30%.
