The program aims to compensate 100% of the CO2 emissions of COP16.
In order to compensate 100% of the nearly 20,000 tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) produced by the Conference of the Parties (COP16), the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and Pronatura have launched a program to purchase carbon credits from various peasant communities in Oaxaca.
In a statement, it was explained that as part of this program the energy consumption of all the negotiation rooms and the various facilities of COP16 is included.
Similarly, the emissions of transport, air conditioning, lighting of social events, communication and food activities generated by the more than 20,000 visitors from almost 200 countries, present in the port of the Mexican Caribbean, are also contemplated.
The towns of the national southeast will receive 10 dollars for each ton of CO2 captured, in addition to creating jobs – thanks to the payment of the bonds – for the peasants and conserving more than 1,400 hectares of forested areas, which represent a payment of between 1,500 and 1,700 pesos per hectare per year.
