UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres made the following statement at 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, December 9 at the COP 16 United Nations Conference in Cancun:
"In Cancun, I see the groups continuing to work hard to deliver a successful and balanced outcome that should be the next important step on the world's long road to a comprehensive solution to the problem of climate change.
Under the common umbrella of the United Nations, in which each country has a voice, the Mexican presidency of the UN climate change conference has established a transparent, fully inclusive system. All countries are free to decide to participate and join in the search for a middle ground that will deliver success.
I see a willingness on the part of the parties for a breakthrough. I see active and open exchange in ministerial consultations, including how to reach political conciliation in anchoring mitigation proposals that have been made in 2010, clarity in the Kyoto Protocol, the establishment of a long-term financing fund, and the decision to implement measures for forests, technology transfer and adaptation.
But much remains to be done. I call on all parties to redouble their efforts and use creative ways to come up with solutions, to travel the last mile to a successful outcome."
