CANCÚN, Q. Roo, December 8, 2010.
CGCS-232.
The President of the United Mexican States, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, met today with the President of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, during the work of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16).
At the meeting, they discussed the progress made so far in the negotiations of the Cancun Conference, as well as the need for all nations, regardless of their level of development, to join forces to realize effective and global actions against climate change.
President Calderón expressed his appreciation to the World Bank for the technical and analytical support provided to Mexico at COP16, as well as for the loans announced today, equivalent to 700 million dollars, granted to our country to support the cutting-edge policies and initiatives on climate change that it is implementing.
These include an effort to replace all of the country's incandescent bulbs with energy-saving bulbs over the next three years, as well as the Appliance Replacement Program, which provides financial support to low-income families to purchase more energy-efficient refrigerators and air conditioners.
The energy savings that these measures imply is an investment, because in the long term they will save more economic resources than they cost now, in addition to promoting a low-carbon economy.
