United States. Automaker Ford is now in a new innovation that could one day bring cold fresh water to the panel of its new cars or trucks.
Ford engineer Doug Martin came up with the idea after reading about a billboard in Lima, Peru, that condenses water from the air and provides a source of drinking water for local residents who otherwise don't have access to drinking water. So he thought of a way to do something like that with cars.
Their innovation picks up condensate from the air conditioner that normally falls from the bottom of the car after it drips from the evaporator. The water is then filtered and pumped into a tap in the passenger drinking compartment.
Martin developed the system with his colleague John Rollinger and sees it as a huge benefit in developing countries where there is a shortage of drinking water. Even in places where they have access to water, but it's not as clean, an adapter kit for the Ford system can filter the water outside and clean it for drinking.
