New commitment to thermoacoustics for more efficient heat pumps

United States. Copeland has invested in BlueHeart Energy, a Dutch startup developing thermoacoustic technology for more efficient and sustainable heat pumps.

Thermoacoustics is a method that uses sound waves in a closed loop to generate heat and cold without the need for conventional refrigerants or mechanical compressors. Although the technology has been studied for years, BlueHeart Energy has managed to adapt it for application in residential heat pumps, offering a more compact, quieter and more environmentally friendly alternative.

Founded in Alkmaar in 2016 as a spin-off of the renowned Dutch research centre TNO, BlueHeart Energy has worked on the development of this technology to maximise its efficiency and facilitate its implementation in domestic heating and cooling systems.

BlueHeart's technology is based on a sealed tubular circuit containing helium pressurized to 60 bar. This system allows you to operate with various heat sources in a temperature range ranging from -20ºC to +50ºC and can offer outlet temperatures between 7ºC and 80ºC.

The main advantage of this approach is that it eliminates the need for refrigerant gases, reducing the environmental impact and maintenance required. In addition, its quiet operation and compact design make it an attractive option for smaller homes.

"This investment will help BlueHeart bring its innovative technology into the commercial readiness phase and reinforces Copeland's commitment to the global energy transition and the delivery of efficient and sustainable heating solutions around the world," said Copeland CEO Ross B. Shuster,

Strategic support to accelerate time to market

Although Copeland has not disclosed the amount of the investment, the company has confirmed that it will provide strategic support to BlueHeart Energy in several key areas to accelerate its market entry. This support will include design assistance for large-scale manufacturing, market analysis, customer engagement strategies, and access to its global distribution network.

With this investment, Copeland reinforces its commitment to innovative technologies that improve energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint in the air conditioning and heating sector.
