Spain. The engineering company Idom, responsible for the design, construction and certification of the San Mamés stadium (where the Athletic de Bilbao football club plays), confirmed that the sports venue has achieved LEED Certification, granted by the Sustainable Construction Council of the United States.
With this recognition, the stadium becomes the first to receive such certification in Europe. This becomes the second award that the sports scene receives, since days ago it was awarded with the "World Architecture Festival", an award that is delivered in Singapore, and that recognized it as the best sports building in the world of new construction.
Some of the most important features of the building and that were taken into account for the LEED Certification are the integration of the stadium in the urban fabric, the promotion of the use of public transport, a lower water consumption that allows to achieve a saving of 47% of drinking water compared to a reference building with standard equipment.
The San Mamés stadium was inaugurated on September 16, 2013, replacing the old San Mamés built in 1913. This space also functions as a center for sports innovation, sports medicine, has an underground athletics track and a municipal sports center.
