Colombia. For the year 2018 it is expected that the South American country will begin to generate wind energy, at the moment it is waiting for the regulatory decree on the Law of Non-Conventional Renewable Energies that allows companies to generate this type of energy.
La Guajira is the area with the greatest potential for wind energy development, however, the conclusion of the Expansion Plan is needed, which is estimated to be completed at the end of this month and which must subsequently be approved by the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
The Mining and Energy Planning Unit is the one that has been in charge of analyzing the possible most beneficial spaces for the implementation of the generating plants of this renewable energy source, and in addition to the Guajira, it has identified areas in the cities of Barranquilla and Cartagena with good wind characteristics.
Currently, Empresas Públicas de Medellín is the firm that has the most important project of power generation with wind Colombia, which has been operating for more than ten years with the Jepírache thermal park that produces about 20 megawatts.
The president of the Colombian Association of Electric Power Generators, Ángela Montoya Holguín, explained to the newspaper El Espectador that "companies are waiting for that regulatory decree to see what the conditions are, because that type of energy in most countries has subsidies. To the extent that there is more energy, we will have better prices. What I see is that there are really many ways to expand the park and this would help strengthen the energy basket."
