Mexico. A student at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam) received a recognition in industrial refrigeration for his research "Flash gas in a cooling system", which was awarded by the Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR).
Christian Ali Muñoz Durán, from the Faculty of Higher Studies (FES), received the Andy Ammonia Award for the 2012 IIAR, which he shared with an English scientist in the area and member of Star Refrigeration. The research describes the nature of flash gas formation and its implications for efficiency and correct energy use in industrial refrigeration systems working with ammonia.
Flash gas has to do with the formation of steam from a certain flow of liquid, with different sources of generation: by a strangulation process, by pressure losses or by heat exchange.
Within his work, Christian mentioned practical cases in which the amount of flash gas generated in the plants under study was calculated, in addition to evaluating the areas of opportunity to improve energy use.
It is hoped that this study can benefit the operation of the plants, save energy and reduce environmental impact.
