Mexico. Coca-Cola FEMSA uses its EOS – REPARE recycling plant, located in San Juan del Río (Querétaro) to evaluate the parts of the chillers that it withdraws from the market, with this it manages to give more years of use to its useful parts.
This policy, which has made it possible to take advantage of 7 out of 10 chillers that are received at the plant, is part of the company's sustainability strategy, in which the culture of recovery and recycling stands out. Moreover, for users they will be able to identify products that include reused parts, since they will be marked with a distinctive label.
That is, Coca-Cola FEMSA promotes the recovery and correct disposal of components and parts of its equipment, specifically with the chillers used in the points of sale, promoting the circular economy and the care of the planet.
Catherine Reuben, Director of Corporate Affairs at Coca-Cola FEMSA Mexico, explained: "The recovery of parts is part of our commitment to the circular economy, which is a key element of our sustainability strategy that is at the heart of our business."
The reuse process and its benefit
Imbera and EOS – REPARE, FEMSA Strategic Business companies, are in charge of the comprehensive scheme for each stage of the life of the cooling equipment. Process in which there is the possibility of taking advantage of the parts of the equipment that are no longer functional to repair and / or produce other equipment.
The data is that 70% of the Coca-Cola FEMSA chillers that are withdrawn from the market due to obsolescence are sent to the EOS – REPARE plant, for evaluation and 'destruction', where the parts that are still useful are used. In other words, this plant recovers, repairs, reuses or recycles up to 99% of the refrigerators that have reached the end of their useful life. This scheme has allowed the reuse of 25,277 new equipment and almost 57,000 pieces of chillers.
Laura Osornio, Head of Operation at EOS Final Disposal, commented: "At EOS we are committed to the circular economy and its benefits, so we started working on reusing the parts of the chillers even before there were legislations in this regard. Currently, the process has become sophisticated and all the parts we reuse are tracked to know where they come from and where they are placed."
However, this process is part of a broad-spectrum project, promoted by Coca-Cola FEMSA, focused on reducing the carbon footprint of the operations. So far, the reuse of parts has allowed the saving of emissions by more than 1.8 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as the processing of more than 3,500 tons of materials.
