United States. Mercedes Benz Stadium, where the 53rd edition of the SuperBowl (February 3) of American football will be played, is the first professional stadium to obtain LEED Platinum certification.
The sports precinct, which has an area of 2,000,000 square feet, is famous for its folding roof structure. Its design represents the best of sustainability and creativity, as it pays close attention to the conservation of energy, light and water.
"We set a goal of achieving the highest LEED rating because it was the right thing to do for our city and the environment. With this achievement, we have a powerful new platform to show the industry and our fans that sustainable and responsible construction is possible for a place of any type, size and scale," said Arthur Blank, president of the Atlanta United football team and owner of the Atlanta Falcons football team.
The premises use a first-class rainfall management system that saves water, reaching 47% less water than the standard. A well-maintained infrastructure aims to conserve water through high-standard facilities. The garden surrounding the Mercedes-Benz stadium is designed for foodcaping in order to contribute to the development of agriculture and food production in the area.
A green landscape, which has an area of 13 acres, was assigned to car parking in addition to public events. The sports icon has 4,000 photovoltaic panels that are enough to generate power for 9 Atlanta Falcons games or 13 Atlanta United games.
Other energy conservation features include electric vehicle charging stations, motorcycle valet parking, walkways and three rail lines connecting the stadium to the city.
