The Sustainable Cities Index ranks the 100 global cities into three pillars of sustainability: People (social), Planet (environmental) and Profit (economic), which align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations.
London is ranked as the most sustainable city in the world in 2018 with particularly high scores on the People and Benefits pillars. The results highlight that the strengths reflected in the state of London can offset the challenges associated with affordability and congestion. London's Planet ranking is lower, but still in the top quartile, reflecting air quality and waste management issues seen in other large cities.
Stockholm, Edinburgh, Singapore and Vienna round out the top five in the Index. While Stockholm and Vienna score highly compared to the Planet criteria, Edinburgh is more aligned with the People's agenda. Singapore ranks highest in the earnings sub-index by a considerable margin
