United States. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs, starting May 1, on steel and aluminum for Mexico and Canada if he is not satisfied with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations.
Mexico signaled it needs a deal by the end of April, or for negotiations to be extended until after the country's elections in the summer, and then the U.S. midterm elections this fall.
Canada and Mexico continue to push for permanent exemptions from the tariffs, which were set at 25 percent for steel and 10 percent for aluminum.
"The United States continues negotiations with Canada and Mexico," along with the European Union, South Korea and others, "on satisfactory alternative measures to address the threat to national security posed by imports of steel goods from those countries," according to Trump's announcement.
Trump pledged to implement them unless he "determines through a new announcement that the United States has arrived at a satisfactory alternative measure" to address the "security threat" of the steel sector.
