Puerto Rico. Tesla first sent Powerwall battery packs to Puerto Rico to power the island after the recent hurricanes. Elon Musk said Tesla would accelerate its efforts to help bring power and is now stepping it up with a new shipment of Powerpacks.
A single Powerpack 2 battery pack has the same power capacity (210 kWh) as nearly 16 Combined Powerwall 2 battery packs (every 13.5 kWh).
Tesla's Powerwall is useful for restarting individual solar installations for homes and small businesses, but Tesla's Powerpack has the potential to connect large parts of the grid online by working with utilities and combining energy storage systems with energy source parks.
Then, several Tesla Powerpacks were spotted at the San Juan airport in Puerto Rico, a couple of weeks ago.
The new shipment came shortly after Musk spoke with Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló about ways Tesla Energy could help rebuild the power grid destroyed by the two hurricanes that recently hit the Caribbean.
Days after his presentation, Cal Lankton, Tesla's vice president of global infrastructure operations, who recently assumed leadership of Tesla Energy's sales and operations, met with Governor Rosselló at the government's command center.
Musk wrote on Twitter last week that they will first focus on helping hospitals and medical centers get stable power, as less than 20% of the island currently has power and some regions still see months without power.
But Tesla is looking to work with Puerto Rico beyond short-term solutions and actually try to rebuild the grid to be more resilient with solar and energy storage.
