International. Lennox shared a series of recommendations to protect air conditioning systems with the arrival of the fall season in the United States. This series of tips are also applicable in some Latin American regions that are governed by seasons.
Keep your heating system running: Fall is the perfect time for a seasonal HVAC maintenance checkup. An inspection and set-up by a trusted and certified HVAC professional will ensure that your heating system is clean and that all parts are in good shape and operating with maximum efficiency. A maintenance check will also help detect any small issues before they become large, ensuring you remain comfortable and trouble-free during the fall and winter months.
Use an ultra-smart thermostat: An ultra-smart thermostat, such as Lennox's iComfort S30 ultraportable thermostat, can help make your home efficient and comfortable day and night. For maximum efficiency, it is recommended that you set the thermostat as low as comfortable when you are at home and awake. Then when you're asleep or out of the house, turn the thermostat 10° to 15° for eight hours and you could save around 10% a year on your utility bill.
Check your windows and doors for air leaks: Keep drafts in the bay and heating bills low by checking your windows and doors for air leaks. Fill any cracks you find with putty. For additional insulation, consider investing in window insulation film. Heavy curtains, as well as sliding doors and windows, can also provide effective protection against drafts.
Look for energy savings in every room: Turning off the lights when you leave a room is a great way to save energy and reduce your utility bills. And to increase energy savings, install the light attenuators. To save even more, up to 75% less electricity per bulb, regular fluorescent bulbs could be changed to CFL or LED lamps.
Remember to keep the fireplace closed unless it is lit. Keeping the shock absorber open is like keeping a window open during the winter; allows hot air to pass through the fireplace.
And, since heating water consumes about 18% of your home's energy, reduce the temperature of your water heater to the hot setting (120°F). Not only will you save energy, but you will avoid burning your hands.
Take advantage of the sun's heat: Once the sun is up, you'll want to capture as much of that heat as possible. Even on cold days, the sun is still hot. Therefore, before leaving the house in the day, you can open the curtains and let the sun shine, if there are certain parts of the house that do not receive sunlight, do not open the curtains. Once the sun goes down, prevent heat from escaping through the windows by closing the curtains.
