Costa Rica. The National Energy Control Center revealed that during 2016, the National Electric System of the Central American nation managed to produce 98% of its energy through renewable sources.
The previous year, the country generated a total of 10,778.32 gigawatt hours (GWh), of these only 1.88% were obtained through thermal sources and the remaining 98.12% were given by renewable sources.
Broken down by sources, 74.44% of the energy was hydro, 10.64% wind, 0.72% biomass, 12.42% geothermal, and 0.01% solar.
On the results of the previous year, the Costa Rican government commented that they were notable for the "low rainfall during most of the year", which deteriorated the Costa Rican capacity to generate hydraulic energy, but did not prevent 271 days of renewable production from being completed.
