United States. The City of Las Vegas and NV Energy have announced a new partnership that, following the approval of a document submitted to the Nevada Public Utilities Commission and ratification by the Las Vegas City Council, will devote a portion of the energy produced by a local solar facility currently under development to the city's operations.
The energy dedicated from this solar installation, coupled with the load the city receives from NV Energy that already satisfies the state's renewable energy portfolio, would allow the city a lower load to be served 100% by renewable energy.
The solar facility that will initially support the city's goal of 100% renewable energy is the 100-megawatt Boulder solar power plant, currently under development in the Eldorado Valley of Boulder City, Nevada.
"This partnership is going to be a sustainability game changer for our city," said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman. "Something people are surprised by is the environmentally conscious way of Las Vegas, when everything they know seems to be less sustainable. However, we are proud to join other community and business leaders who are leaders in conservation. If approvals happen we will become the first city of our size in the country to achieve 100% renewable energy for city operations."
