International. SAE International, the standard-setting association, which represents automotive engineers, said it is working with a group of automakers to investigate the formation of a new Cooperative Research Program (CRP) to investigate the safety of R1234yf refrigerant.
The creation of this group was born in response to the objection of the manufacturer Daimler to use this refrigerant for safety reasons. The CRP will technically evaluate the results of Daimler's flammability test and whether the vehicles were involved in head-on collisions.
This will be the second CRP that the SAE has carried out. In 2009, following a CRP sponsored by 15 automakers including Daimler, SAE announced that "from evaluations and test results it was concluded that the HFO1234yf can be safely accommodated through industry-established practices for vehicles in design, engineering, manufacturing and service."
SAE International hosted a meeting to discuss a preliminary scope of the research and actively asks equipment manufacturers to formally join the new CRP.
