United States. The North American nation doubled its solar photovoltaic capacity in 2011 with an increase of 109% to 1,855 megawatts (MW) compared to 2010, according to the Association of Solar Energy Professionals of America.
This figure more than doubled the number of megawatts produced in 2012 and was also a record at the time, when 887 MW were registered.
According to the Association of Solar Energy Industries, this amount of energy is enough to supply electricity to around 370,000 homes, which represents 109% in 2011.
President Barack Obama recently emphasized that the nation needs to develop all kinds of energy sources in order to support its energy strategy. "What we need now is a strategy that encompasses all of the above for the twenty-first century, that develops all kinds of energy produced by Americans," he said.
