United States. Google announced that it is running a green project based on the use of gray water from bathtubs and sinks to be implemented in data centers and modify server cooling techniques. The process is already underway in Douglas County, Georgia.
According to Jim Brown, representative of that center, for the cooling of this equipment drinking water was being consumed in order to meet the needs through the "free cooling" process, which forced the managers to accelerate the initial plan.
This plan consists of taking about 30% of the water used by the surrounding population; the liquid that passes through the building and has not evaporated reaches a treatment plant that disinfects it and removes solid minerals. He is then sent to the Chattahoochee River.
"We soon realized that the water we were using didn't have to be clean enough to drink, so we talked to the authorities about developing a system that would reuse the water through our cooling infrastructure. So we can use recycled water for 100% of our cooling needs," Brown said.
With this system, the search giant now only uses recycled water to meet the cooling needs of the facilities, which are said to have one million servers.
