The General Director of Energy and Mines of the Government of Aragon, Pilar Molinero, opened on Wednesday the conference on fuel cell science and technology (Fuel Cells Science & Technology Conference 2010) together with the president of the scientific committee, Professor Lars Sjunnesson. This international congress organized by Elsevier, the publishing group of the Journal of Power Sources, brings together 200 expert researchers in hydrogen technologies for two days in Zaragoza.
As reported by the Government of Aragon in a statement, Pilar Molinero has highlighted to the scientific community the commitment of Aragon to the use of hydrogen as an energy vector, and the advances that the Community has made in this field in recent years.
The Hydrogen Foundation has launched more than 30 national and international projects in these technologies involving local companies, in addition to having in its facilities a unique infrastructure for the production of hydrogen from renewable energies.
This infrastructure has been completed since last June with the second hydrogen plant in the region which, together with the hydropower plant created in Zaragoza on the occasion of the International Exhibition of 2008, opens the first hydrogen highway in Spain.
Looking to the future, the Director of Energy and Mines has pointed out that "we must be prepared for the new energy scenario, Europe looks towards 2020 with objectives in emission reduction, energy improvement and renewable energies, where hydrogen and fuel cells undoubtedly have a place".
In addition, he added that "hydrogen technology has reached a sufficient level to allow specific applications and this is demonstrated by the fact that numerous business representatives have attended this congress".
The opening ceremony was followed by the lecture of J. Robert Selman, from the Illinois Institute of Technology, United States, who received the Grove Medal for a lifetime of research in fuel cells.
The Government of Aragon and the Hydrogen Foundation sponsor this prestigious Grove Fuel Cells event that takes place this Wednesday and Thursday at the World Trade Center in Zaragoza and that confirms the city as the international headquarters of initiatives related to hydrogen and global capital in 2016 when it will host the World Hydrogen Congress, WHEC.
The aim of the conference is for researchers and technologists from around the world to raise awareness of the opportunities that innovation in the field of fuel cells offers to science, technology and engineering. The program includes plenary sessions, oral presentations and presentation of advances in fuel cells, modeling and control, materials, cells and stacks, systems and applications or electrochemistry.
