The GLOBAL NATURE FOUNDATION received on May 25, 2011, in Brussels the prestigious award "Best of the Best LIFE Projects in Europe" "The best LIFE projects among the best in Europe", for "Life Canal de Castilla Project", one of the 20 best projects.
The "Canal de Castilla" project was completed in 2010. The results have consisted of the recovery and conservation of more than 30 small wetlands that surround this important water channel built in the eighteenth century in northern Spain (Castilla y León). Although most of these wetlands were included in the Natura 2000 Network, they needed greater protection, which was carried out by the Global Nature Foundation.
The LIFE Programme is the most important European financial instrument in the European Union that provides financial funds for hundreds of nature conservation activities.
The award ceremony will take place on 25 May at the European Parliament and will be awarded to the 20 best LIFE projects developed in Europe over the past two decades.
On June 2, the Biodiversity Foundation will present the Global Nature Foundation with the award, from the hands of the Spanish Minister of the Environment, for the extensive conservation program of Spanish wetlands, carried out in part, through the realization of various land stewardship agreements with the current owners of the same in the Region of Tierra de Campos.
Recently, the Global Nature Foundation received the Fundación MAPFRE Award for "Best Environmental Performance", an award given by the Queen of Spain.
