The regional senator for the Balearic Islands Pere Sampol will request this Tuesday to the central government the possibility of increasing the share of renewable energies subsidized in the community, with a view to increasing the percentage of clean energy production.
To this end, Sampol will today transfer a question to the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, Miguel Sebastián, on the reasons why the Executive has not granted a subsidized quota to the extra-peninsular system of the Balearic Islands, as the Canary Islands have.
It should be remembered that the deployment of renewable energy bonuses in the Canary Islands were one of the conditions proposed by the Canarian Coalition to support the 2011 General Budget.
Sampol commented that there are projects in the Balearic Islands that cannot be undertaken because the quota of renewables has already been exhausted, although he recalled that the Canary Islands have a bonus system because it is an extra-peninsular system.
Therefore, the senator understands that the quota must be increased in the islands and points out that there is a specific article in the Special Regime of the Balearic Islands (REB), which establishes the obligation to attend to the specificity of the islands in terms of energy planning.
In addition, in his opinion, this measure would be positive for the islands because it is one of the territories with the highest volume of hours of sun exposure, despite being one of the autonomies with the lowest percentage of renewable energy production.
Finally, Sampol stressed that this greater quota capacity would be used to support small farms, such as solar panels on rooftops, mechanisms that are positive for the industrial fabric of the Balearic Islands. (EUROPA PRESS)
