The German engineering company Siemens has received from the American energy company MidAmerican Energy Company, owned by the American millionaire Warren Buffet, an order for 258 wind turbines, which makes it the largest order for onshore wind energy in the United States in its history, according to the company in a statement.
The 258 wind turbines have a capacity of 2.3 megawatts (MW) and will be installed in different wind farms in the State of Iowa. After commissioning, scheduled for January 2012, the combined capacity of 593 MW will be sufficient to power 190,000 U.S. homes with clean energy.
The CEO of Siemens' renewable energy division, René Umlauft, recalled that the company is already a leader in the offshore wind energy market and stressed that it is now having "great success" with its onshore wind turbines, as evidenced by the agreement it recently signed with Enel Green Power to commission 260 wind turbines in Europe.
"Our largest onshore order to date from the United States demonstrates that we are on track to become one of the three leading suppliers of wind turbines in 2012."
MidAmerican Energy President Bill Fehrman was pleased to be able to advance his wind power projects in Iowa, which allow the state to benefit from building new renewable energy generators.
Revenues in fiscal year 2010 from its Siemens' Environmental Portfolio division, which includes wind turbines, reached €28 billion, making Siemens the world's largest supplier of environmentally friendly technologies.
In addition, its products and solutions enabled its customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 270 million tonnes, equivalent to the total annual emissions of the cities of Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore. (EUROPA PRESS)
