The United States says the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is the worst environmental disaster in the country's history. That is why they have made the determination to sue the oil company BP for violating the country's environmental laws, they have also sued 4 more companies linked to the disaster.
Civil and criminal investigations continue, the goal of the U.S. government, is that taxpayers are not the ones who have to bear all the costs of restoring the natural area of the Gulf of Mexico and that its economy is not affected.
The lawsuit accuses the companies of violating safety regulations, failing to use the highest drilling technology available and failing to conduct continuous monitoring of the work done. The first consequences have already appeared for these companies, that after knowing the complaint of the companies, the shares plummeted.
The fine imposed by the lawsuit is estimated to be about $21 billion, about $4.3 billion per barrel spilled, and if the negligence is considered serious, it can reach $5.4 billion.
In addition, BP takes on two other lawsuits by two companies sued by the U.S. government, and claim that BP is responsible for the disaster.
