Girona has hosted this Saturday the constitution of Som energia (We are energy), the first renewable energy cooperative in Spain, which was born with about 340 members and the objectives of promoting the consumption and production of energy through biogas plants, windmills and solar panels, as well as energy saving.
The act of constitution has had about 150 attendees, explained in statements to Europa Press the spokesman of the cooperative Marc Garfella, and in it it has been shown that the intention is that the members can have assured in about six months that the domestic energy they consume comes exclusively from renewable energies.
The members contribute an initial share capital of 100 euros to the cooperative, refundable when they leave the entity, and may also invest in small-scale production projects that will ensure "economic performance".
The initiative, despite being born in Girona and having most of the associates in this province, wants to be extended to all of Spain, so that anyone can participate in it regardless of their place of residence.
Garfella explained that, in addition to ensuring in six months by changing billing that the energy consumed comes from renewables, the cooperative expects to have the first projects of its own production underway within a year, through medium-scale infrastructures.
The "low demand" that exists in Spain for energy from renewables ensures that there will be enough to cover the requests of the association, said the spokesman for Som Energia. (EUROPA PRESS)
