76% of Spaniards and 72% of Europeans are in favour of promoting current biofuels based on agricultural raw materials, according to the Eurobarometer survey carried out by the European Commission.
Likewise, 82% of Spaniards and 83% of Europeans support the promotion of second-generation biofuels, which are produced from non-food raw materials.
According to the president of the Association of Renewable Energy Producers (APPA) Biofuels, Roderic Miralles, the public opinion survey confirms that the Spanish and European policy to promote biofuels "has the majority support of the population despite the fallacies spread against it".
In addition, the Eurobarometer coincides in time with the report 'Perspective on the rise in raw material prices in 2006-2008' carried out by the World Bank, which also denies the influence of biofuels on the rise in food prices a few years ago.
In this regard, the report points out that agricultural raw materials used for the production of biofuels only use 1.5% of the cultivated land worldwide.
Thus, the Eurobarometer and the World Bank report conclude that "biofuels are the only commercially available renewable alternative currently available to move towards a more energy- and environmentally sustainable transport model". (EUROPA PRESS)
