The Government signs the statute of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena)

The Council of Ministers has approved the signing 'ad referendum' of the Statute of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) and has ordered its referral to the Cortes Generales.

Irena is the first international organization dedicated to renewable energies. It was officially founded on January 26, 2009 in Bonn (Germany).

The initiative of its foundation was originally German, but from the outset denmark and Spain joined decisively, which hosted the final preparatory conference of Irena in 2008.

The Government assures that Spain's world leadership in renewable energies and the relevant international presence of Spanish companies in the sector make it advisable for the country to join the agency as soon as possible in order to maintain its influence in it and achieve the maximum possible industrial benefits while promoting renewable energies in the world.

It is the circumstance that the current Secretary of State for Energy, Pedro Marín, aspires to become president of Irena, according to the Minister of Industry, Miguel Sebastián. (EUROPA PRESS)
