The non-profit organization that deals in Spain with managing the recovery and recycling system of used oil, called SIGAUS (Integrated Management System of Used Oils) has launched a communication campaign in which it publicizes the important role of the consumer in the operation of this recycling system.
Under the slogan "You do more than you think", the campaign aims to inform the motorist of how much is achieved with his small (and in many cases unknown) contribution. And, although it is well known that vehicles emit CO2, a gas that contributes to global warming, other possible sources of pollution from cars go much more unnoticed.
One of the most polluting is used motor oil. A substance that, after 15,000 or 20,000 km of its useful life in the vehicle, becomes a hazardous waste and with a great capacity to contaminate the soil, water and land.
Two liters of used oil can contaminate 2,000 m3 of water, which is approximately the amount that an Olympic swimming pool contains. In the air, five liters of oil burned in a stove can contaminate, with lead and other harmful substances, 1,000,000 m3 of air, which is the amount of air breathed by a person for three years.
Therefore, used motor oil requires proper treatment. Even without knowing it, every time an oil change operation is carried out, the motorist is setting in motion the chain of recycling this waste.
In reality, and as established by Spanish law, the consumer pays a fixed amount (6 euro cents per kg) when he acquires a product, in this case new lubricating oil for his vehicle, an amount that is destined to finance the management of the used oil that will later be generated. This contribution is made whether the oil is changed in the workshop, or if, for example, the lubricant is purchased at a service station or in a shopping center.
On the website www.hacesmasdeloquecrees.org motorists will be able to know what, thanks to their contribution, is achieved in the field of used oil management. By using a simple application, the environmental benefits achieved are calculated, depending on the type of vehicle and the number of times the workshop has been used to change the oil.
