The TANG is another good-looking, high-powered yacht that harnesses the energy of the wind, even when the sails are lowered. Thanks to a collaborative effort by the International Battery and Electric Marine Propulsion, this luxury yacht is currently undergoing trials in San Francisco Bay, South Africa. This carbon fiber boat comes equipped with twin 18-kilowatt motors of permanent magnets powered by a 144-volt lithium-ion battery.
The propellers rotating in the wake of the ship function as generators and regenerate electricity to the batteries. At a time when there is not enough wind to charge the batteries, the two 22-kilowatt diesel generators generate power to power the lithium-ion battery. In addition, it has a 144-volt charger that can be connected to a number of points with different voltages and frequencies.
The battery not only powers the yacht, but also generates enough power for various appliances on board. The yacht includes a 37-inch flat-screen TV, LED lighting, two refrigerator-freezers, dishwasher, microwave, air conditioning and a water machine. This stunning catamaran will be officially shown at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2011.
