International. Daimler, the parent company recognized for the manufacture of the high-end Mercedes-Benz vehicle, announced that from 2017 it will use CO2 gas as a refrigerant for the air conditioning systems of cars.
The German company, which was previously in a bid to rule out the use of R1234yf refrigerant, has proven that carbon dioxide can be a better component to condition the temperatures inside its cars. Specifically, the first vehicles that will bring the novelty will be the S-Class and E-Class, but it will be implemented in the rest of the brand's models.
Daimler confirmed that with the use of CO2 they will contribute to the care of the environment, and additionally, the refrigerant will provide for the system to cool or heat the interior of the vehicle more quickly, in addition to not being flammable.
As for safety, the manufacturer is aware that CO2 requires a higher pressure, about 10 times higher than that of current systems, so they confirmed a reinforcement in the facilities including ducts and seals that support this pressure.
However, Mercedes confirmed that it will also include R1234yf gas in the rest of its new vehicles.
