Chile. The initiative aims to reduce energy consumption in that country by 12% by 2012 through the concept of energy efficiency, promoting generation with non-conventional renewable energies and hydraulic energy, where it has a potential of 20,000 MW to develop.
To meet the goal, Chile will modify lighting standards in the public and private sectors and will also create an Interministerial Commission on Energy Efficiency to promote the responsible use of energy.
The president of the nation, Sebastían Piñera, commented during the presentation of the National Energy Plan 2012-2020 that "we must change the culture of the inhabitants of Chile and realize that we no longer have the right to continue using energy as if it were infinite."
Chile's installed energy capacity is about 16,000 MW, and it needs to add about 8,000 MW to meet the annual energy demand that grows on average between 5% and 7% per year.
