Due to the number of accidents that are occurring due to mismanagement of ammonia in the fruit and vegetable idustri, the Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, Evelyn Matthei, attended a meeting with a group of experts in the handling of this refrigerant gas.The reason that triggered the alarms was the death of a worker in the fruit industry due to mishandling of the refrigerant. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Mayol and the Superintendent of Social Security, María José Zaldívar. One of the conclusions of the day was to form a working group that manages to rigorously standardize the handling of highly toxic and dangerous gases, with the aim of protecting workers in the agricultural industry. Secondly, they agreed to provide a certification of good handling of the export products that are the product of that market.
The first step, which plans to be taken in the coming days, is to analyze the existing protocols in other countries, because according to Matthei he wants to find a standard that serves as an example in what has to do with the management of ammonia.
Additionally, the minister informed, it is intended to certify professionals, technicians and installers who use these standards in the implementation of this type of systems.
"We want to avoid a repeat of accidents like codegua's," the official insisted.
