Meeting this target for 2013 has an impact on the expansion of the use of biomass as the main source of energy. Currently Andalusia leads the national generation of biomass (42%), providing 78% of renewable energy in the community.
The growth of this type of energy has occurred due to the boom in heating installations in the domestic and residential sectors with biomass from olive grove waste (pictured), which concentrates more than 1/3 of the region's biomass potential.
The community has 17 biomass plants that produce 190 megawatts and the Andalusian Energy Agency expects that by the end of 2010 it will reach 250 megawatts. Francisco Bas, director of the Agency, explains that biomass is the best axis of compliance with renewable energies in Andalusia.
