The green building sector has ceased to be a prospect to become a reality, thanks to three important trends namely: government initiatives, increased residential demand for green construction and improvements in sustainable materials. For this reason, the manager of the IMF's consulting group, Rick Dutmer believes that: "Green construction will continue to grow. It's not a question of whether your firm should invest in understanding the ecological sustainability trend and how to produce sustainable projects, but how much you should invest and how quickly you should do it."
In 2006, non-residential construction with green projects totaled US$13.4 billion and it is expected that by 2008, non-residential projects that follow these principles will amount to US$21.2 billion. Likewise, the three largest segments of green non-residential construction, offices, education and health services are expected to represent more than 80% of the segment and there will be a growth of 20% in sectors such as accommodation and commerce.
