ASHRAE Updates Safety Standards for Refrigeration Systems

ASHRAE

International. The update to the ANSI/ASHRAE 15-2022 standard for refrigeration system safety, the 15.2 safety standard for refrigeration systems in residential applications, and the 34-2022 standard on refrigerant safety designation and classification is now available.

These standards provide essential guidance to manufacturers, design engineers and operators who need to keep up with new air conditioning and refrigeration requirements.

Standard 34 describes a shorthand way of naming refrigerants and assigns safety ratings based on toxicity and flammability data, while Standard 15 establishes procedures for operating equipment and systems when those refrigerants are used.

What's New in Standard 15-2022
*Changes in the use of non-A1 refrigerants
*New overpressure protection
*New piping requirements
*Updated refrigerant volume and charge limit calculations
*Refrigerant detector/detection and mitigation actions

15.2 is the Low-Rise Residential Refrigeration Safety Standard that can be trusted by all stakeholders. It is designed to accommodate the use of A2L-rated refrigerants in low-rise residential applications and for use by manufacturers, installers, contractors, service technicians, building code officers, and others.

Specific requirements for which refrigerants, the maximum allowable refrigerant charge, fittings and interconnection pipes can be used are included, so that, in the event that the refrigerant charge is completely released, the concentration in the space remains safely below the lower flammability limit of the refrigerant.

Standard 34 establishes a uniform system for assigning reference numbers, safety ratings and refrigerant concentration limits. The standard also identifies requirements for applying for refrigerant safety designations and classifications.

What's New in Standard 34-2022
*Safety designations for twenty new refrigerants
*Modernized Filing Requirements for New Refrigerants
*Updates to capture flammability limits used for maximum non-A1 refrigerant charge calculations.
