Latin America. Andrés Álvarez Salcedo, portfolio manager of cold water systems for Latin America at Johnson Controls, recently gave a talk on energy efficiency thanks to the integration of technology, efficiency and control systems.
The theme presented at the last Energy Efficiency Expo in Argentina, was "A day in the life of a green and intelligent building" in which the expert shared his experience and that of the company on how it implements technological energy efficiency systems aimed at achieving the highest savings rates, recovery and efficiency in terms of water and energy consumption in commercial buildings.
Among the concepts expressed during Andrés Álvarez's speech, the ideal of operation of an intelligent building that, thanks to technological integration, becomes green, efficient and, therefore, reduces all environmental impact indices, was shown.
A day in the life of a green and intelligent building:
Álvarez gave a detailed explanation of what happens in the course of the day with consumption and savings when control systems, connectivity and technology are integrated and applied to make a building a sustainable space.
- 8hs PM on Sunday: intelligent planning of the next day through which the system accesses the forecast of the next day.
- 10hs PM on Sunday: recharge batteries at their highest level.
- 12hs AM on Monday: intelligent charging of the fleet of hybrid vehicles of the company that occupies the facilities.
- 2hs AM on Monday: previous cooling of the thermal mass of the building.
- 4 to 6am AM on Monday: identification of faults, notification to central, repair before employees arrive.
- 8am Am on Monday: employees arrive and plug in their hybrid vehicles.
- 9am Am on Monday: meeting rooms and offices are ready to be used at the ideal temperature.
- 10am Am on Monday: A sustainability analyst requests information from the system.
- 11am AM on Monday: if the building is in an area of variable energy costs, the automatic reduction of energy demand is activated.
- 12pm on Monday: depending on the number of people present in each of the rooms and spaces of the building, an intelligent tracking helps to optimize each environment.
- 13hs on Monday: artificial lighting, curtains and blinds are automatically adapted according to the rotation of the sun and environmental conditions.
- 2 p.m. on Monday: Demand reduction is leveraged by the computer system by asking building employees to disconnect devices.
- 15hs on Monday: it is cloudy and therefore the accumulation of energy through the solar systems falls with which the batteries are activated.
- 5 p.m. on Monday: employees retire to their homes and the system constantly monitors these changes aimed at turning off lights and ventilation systems.
- 19hs on Monday: the cleaning service enters the building and each floor adapts the lighting to allow maintenance tasks.
The main benefit is the decrease in energy consumption that the building demands for the development of the daily life of its occupants. One of the outstanding positive impacts is the decrease in disbursements for consumption expenses with the energy supplier.
At Johnson Controls we are very concerned about the environment and it is one of our top priorities. Because of this, we work daily to develop technologies that achieve better energy efficiency indices and to reduce the environmental footprint of our entire value chain. We are convinced that natural resources cannot wait and that is why we continuously invest a lot of effort to fulfill our promise to build smart cities and communities," said Andrés Álvarez Salcedo.
Johnson Controls recently became the first partner of the World Green Building Council, which represents 19 countries and thousands of member companies around the world.
Clay Nesler, vice president of industrial relations at Johnson Controls said: "The progressive and successful work of the World Green Building Council for the Americas has been driving market demand towards more sustainable buildings and communities. Johnson Controls is proud to be the first partner of the World Green Building Council for the Americas. In this role, we seek to engage in conversations that highlight the economic, social and environmental benefits of green buildings as a critical platform to create safer, smarter and more sustainable cities."
