International. ABB and Samsung Electronics will collaborate in a global partnership to provide jointly developed technologies for energy saving, energy management and intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) connection of residential and commercial buildings.
Buildings generate nearly 40 percent of annual global CO21 emissions, and the partnership between the two companies will create a platform to build a long-term relationship for innovation in smart technology, smart control and smart devices.
The collaboration will allow Samsung and ABB to expand customer access to home automation technologies and better device management, while making it easier to change electricity charges.
Smart homes use connected devices and appliances integrated through a centralized system to save money, time, and energy. By connecting the Samsung SmartThings app and ABB's home automation solutions, for example, residents will be able to use their personal devices to monitor and manage a full spectrum of appliances, as well as gas and smoke sensors, power, security and comfort systems from a single app. Proactive management of appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, to operate outside peak hours, for example, ensures grid optimization and reduces energy costs.
Mike Mustapha, President of ABB Smart Buildings, said: "We envision a future where our customers can benefit from significant carbon and energy savings by further improving access to fully integrated and holistic smart building technology. The partnership with a major technology innovation leader such as Samsung Electronics further supports ABB's vision and offering to connect entire buildings with open and agnostic solutions, and provide insights into total energy consumption, including elements such as electric vehicle (EV) charging. This not only minimizes the carbon footprint of the built environment, but also offers a smooth and engaging user experience."
Parallel to home automation solutions, the two companies intend to expand collaboration between Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) products and Samsung Electronics' Variable Refrigerant Flow Room (VRF) Control System and ABB HVAC Control System for Commercial Buildings. and multi-dwelling developments.
Chanwoo Park, director of IoT business at Samsung Electronics, said: "The simplicity of just two vendors coming together in this way adds ease to smart building projects for construction companies and real estate developers as well. To modernize existing buildings or new sites, with a single source of solutions, they can be sure that the products will integrate and work together seamlessly. It also improves the after-sales experience because there is only one platform for the entire system."
