International. ASHRAE has published an updated edition of the ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170 on Ventilation of Healthcare Facilities. The standard offers guidance, regulation, and mandates to designers of healthcare facilities.
The 2021 edition offers critical guidance for the designers and operators of these top-of-the-line facilities and incorporates 17 appendices to the 2017 edition of the standard. Changes include:
- Extended requirements to allow the discharge of exhaust gases from the isolation room of airborne infectious infections to general exhaust gases under certain conditions
- Revised scope, with improved guidance on the thermal comfort conditions provided
- Extensive modifications to address outpatient and residential sections
- Extensive reviews to air filtration requirements
- Adding new columns to ventilation tables to prescribe filtration requirements and designate unoccupied turndown
- Extended guidance on separation distance requirements for various intake and exhaust arrangements, in coordination with data related to ASHRAE Standard 62.1
- Improved guidance related to mental and behavioral health
