Mexico. Carrier Transicold Mexico held the digital panel "Sustainable technology in refrigeration and transport equipment" in which leading experts shared their opinions, for example, regarding the carbon footprint, all with the aim of publicizing different actions that promote and encourage a lower ecological impact in the cold chain.
Pedro González, Services Manager of Carrier Transicold Mexico; Leonardo Gómez, general director of the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP), and Caroline Verut, president of the Sustainability for Mexico association, agreed on the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and using renewable energies to reduce costs.
"The world is on fire, for example Mexico ranks fourth in CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels in power plants. The goal is to walk from the degenerative to the regenerative, the challenge is to make ordinary and daily decisions in our professional practice and that have an extraordinary impact on the world, "said Caroline.
During the virtual meeting, Pedro stressed that companies are currently using much more sustainable business models. "I remember that for 20 years we were made aware of the damage to the ozone layer, since that time one of the spirits of Carrier was to look for and use ecological refrigerants."
"We have to implement actions that contribute to the use of cleaner engines with very low CO2 emissions and that comply with California standards. By 2030, we have the challenge of continuing to attack the problem and eliminate the carbon footprint."
González also noted that the excess noise emitted by certain refrigeration equipment is auditory pollution, which can become a health problem for operators, who present stress and irritability, among others.
At the time, the ANTP expert stressed that fleets older than 18 years (on average) should be regulated.
"We must resort to cleaner energies such as natural electromobility, but also to actions such as smart parking and renovation of vehicle parks; in road transportation, it is necessary to travel with the technology available in the different markets in order to achieve greater efficiency and competitiveness".
How to achieve energy efficiency in refrigeration units? Among the different alternatives, Pedro González mentioned that the heat transfer in the equipment must be taken care of, as this will help reduce the amount of refrigerant.
For her part, Caroline mentioned that according to the National Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions 2015 "the transport sector is one of the biggest causes of climate change, as is the energy industry."
To combat damage to the planet, it is important to create strong global alliances, build on the principles of the circular economy and reduce waste of resources; as well as improving biodiversity and helping to protect nature, among others.
