Emerson launched a new line of Copeland Scroll compressors

International. Emerson introduced its new line of fixed-speed Copeland Scroll compressors for commercial applications designed for low-GWP refrigerants. The new line will help comply with 2023 Department of Energy (DOE) regulations, as well as California Air Resources Board (CARB) refrigerant regulations.

The company explained that Copeland's next-generation fixed-speed scroll compressors will initially launch with 12-15-tonne models in February with the full 6-40 tonne line being phased out over the next two years. These compressors are ready for regulation and optimized for the following refrigerants: R410A (ZPKZ models), R32 (YPK1 / KA models) and R454B (YAK1 models).

"Complying with upcoming regulations, which include higher levels of efficiency and lower GWP refrigerant capacity in products, presents a challenge for our customers," said Mark Bills, vice president and general manager of Commercial Air Conditioning at Emerson. "This innovative compressor line has been carefully designed to deliver efficiency and reliability and is suitable for our customers and end users to apply in a wide range of commercial applications, including roofs, splits, chillers and reversible systems."

Emerson's next-generation fixed-speed scroll compressors offer the following new features:

  • New scrolling design that replaces a 20-year scrolling platform.
  • New hermetic motor redesigned to maximize efficiency.
  • Single displacement discharge valve to reduce overcompression under light loads, optimizing performance in a wide range of applications.
  • Oil injection (certain models) to mitigate the heat in the scrolls, thus increasing the operating envelope.
  • Plug-n-play electronics to prevent customers from redesigning their system drivers.
  • Harmonized external features to reduce footprint and simplify tandem designs.
  • Tandems and multiples (limited models) will be available shortly after the February launch.
  • Manufactured on a new state-of-the-art automated assembly line in Lebanon, MO

Copeland fixed-speed scroll compressors for commercial applications achieve up to 8% more system-level IEER and IPLV efficiency than legacy models, without compromising the ease of installation and service of the system.
